Service above self

“Rotary is an organization of business
and professional persons united worldwide
who provide humanitarian service,
encourage high ethical standards
in all vocations and help build goodwill
and peace in the world.”

by Unknown
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

by Margaret Mead
"Give until it hurts.  What you give may be a drop in the ocean, but without that drop the ocean will be incomplete."
by Mother Teresa

"No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another."
by Charles Dickens

In honor of our nation's military, the Sunrise Rotary Club dedicates May's speakers to the military.
Please visit us as we hear presentations ranging from our retired veterans to current heroes reporting from the current battle fields.

The schedule of May's speakers is as follows:

May 2nd - Deb Leathers from the Air Force Villages
Deb will give a presentation on what type of living accommodations are available to retired military officers and their spouses.

May 9th - Annette Hernandez from the San Antonio International Airport
Annette & Friends will give a presentation on the great homecoming that
San Antonio offers returning war heroes.

May 16th - Staff Sergeant Sean Kohlmeyer, United States Marine Corps
SSGT Kohlmeyer & Friends will report on "The Rest of the Story" from Iraq - the good news that
our country's news media doesn't want to report on.

May 23rd - Club Assembly

May 30th - Pete Van De Putte, Jr. from Dixie Flag Manufacturing Company
Pete will give his informative presentation on our nation's flag.  This is what our military fights for.
As this is Military Appreciation Month, Pete says he will most likely delve into military flags
along with our country's flag.

Our recognition of the National Military Appreciation Month continues with the Welcome A Hero program.  Elaine Loehlein, Gary Young, Annette Hernandez (program coordinator for the San Antonio Airport System), and Avis & Jerry Bergh gave a wonderful report on the Welcome A Hero Program at our International Airport.  It turned out that we had yesterday's heroes talking about the arrival of today's heroes.

Gary was a combat medic in the Army and Jerry was a fighter pilot in the Air Force.  Gary was a recipient of the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts during his service in the Viet Nam War.  (He also received the Texas Medal of Valor for his actions during the sniper attack during the 1979 Fiesta Battle of Flowers parade.  Gary said that he was the only medic in the area of the shootings, and he quickly began working with the shooting victims.)  Jerry was a pilot of the F 86 and the F 101 jets.

As expected, our heroes arrival are always met with lots of emotion.  While wives are hugging and kissing the husbands, the mothers are always in tears.  Their presentation included what a huge difference today's Armed Forces members have in returning from war compared to the days of Viet Nam.  Now they are treated with a crowd of flag and banner waving fans while in the days of the Viet Name War they were yelled at as baby killers and spat upon.  MUCH BETTER!!!!!!

While Elaine, Gary, Avis, and Jerry are members of the Airport's Ambassador program, The Welcome A Hero program is open to all members of the community.  Annette sends out an email to those interested with the arrival information of returning heroes.  The city provides flags for you to wave and even stamps your parking ticket for FREE parking.

To join this noble effort, copy and paste the following email address to send Annette an email:  annette.hernandez @sanantonio.gov.  (REMOVE THE SPACE AFTER HER NAME.)  Ask her to add you to her Welcome A Hero email list, and you too can join in the patriotic excitement.
